Lessons from the Farm

I recently read a work of fiction that had a young man leading an army against an evil king.  He understood that the task was hopeless unless he had some extraordinary outside help.  To seek the needed help he went on a quest to an isolated island to attempt to enter a mountain stronghold.  The only way to gain entrance was to speak his “true” name.  His given name was Eragon, but that name did not describe his character.  The only thing he could do was to look into his own heart and be honest with who he was, both good and bad.  Once he was honest with himself he was able to speak his “true” name and gained entrance to the mountain stronghold and received the promised help.

This story is not so different from the Biblical story of Jacob.  His birth name means, “heel, or one who cheats to get what he wants”.  After cheating his brother out of both his birthright and blessing he had to flee to another land to live.  Along the way he was introduced to God, but did not submit himself to God’s laws for living.  Many years later as he returned home with his family and flocks he again met a messenger from God.  They wrestled all night until the messenger dislocated his hip.  Jacob refused to let the messenger go until he received a blessing.  The messenger refused to give the blessing until Jacob spoke his name, his “true” name of cheater.  Now, the messenger already knew his name, but he wanted Jacob to be honest with himself.

Once Jacob admitted his flawed character the messenger blessed him and changed his name to Israel, which means “one on whose behalf God strives.”  He went on his journey a changed man, no longer just seeking what he wanted but to live within the covenant that had first been given to his grandfather Abraham.

Are you struggling with your character flaws?  Do you sometimes make inappropriate decisions based upon selfishness?  Have you become weary of ministry?  Then, maybe you need a spiritual name adjustment.  Take some time today to seek out your motivation for serving God.  Who are you really serving, God or yourself?  Be honest with yourself and God in all areas.  He can transform your tired and discouraged heart into one that beats in time with His own.  It may mean a change, but is worth it.
